Skirmishes during the American Civil War
Fredericksburg Virginia is home to several important Civil War battles. These included the first major urban combat of the war, the first battle of the Rappahannock River, and the first battle to be fought on the front line. The city is a popular destination for history buffs. It is only an hour drive from Washington, DC. Located along the Rappahannock River, the town is rich in historic architecture.
Ferry Farm was George Washington’s boyhood home. During the Civil War, the Union Army occupied the property. A replica of the house stands on the site today.
Ferry Farm was a major strategic location for the Union, and many Federal regiments from New York spent summers there. They built two floating bridges over the Rappahannock, and occupied encampments on the north side of the river. Their activities included writing letters home, playing games, and washing clothes.
After the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, Ferry Farm became a Union winter camp. In March of 1862, the first pontoon bridge was built across the Rappahannock. Visit another area in town here.
Closed on holidays
George Washington’s Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg, VA is closed on certain holidays. The home and grounds are open on other days, though.
Ferry Farm is a replica of the home of George Washington’s childhood. It is a small, historic park that offers visitors a chance to learn about life in early America. To learn more, visit the Visitor Center.
There are guided tours of the house and the gardens, as well as a self-guided tour. Visitors will also receive a map of the farm. During peak season, the farm is open from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Aside from its historic home, the park has picnic areas, grills, horseshoe pits, and walking paths. During the summer, the park is shaded and perfect for picnicking.

Replica
Ferry Farm is an outdoor living history museum that features a replica of George Washington’s boyhood home. The home was reconstructed over the archaeological footprint of the original. It is now open to the public in Stafford County, Virginia.
The site is located along the northern bank of the Rappahannock River. A ferry system served the farm. In addition, the site was used for skirmishes during the American Civil War in 1862.
This site has been under archeological research for over 100 years. Summer digs are held by a team of undergraduate and graduate volunteers. Some of the artifacts that have been discovered during these excavations include items from prehistoric times to the Civil War.
The Ferry Farm site is also part of the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. The area was home to many important battles. These included the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862.
